Student 14: Graeme Jones, Director of Production at Homeswest, spoke at the Housing Graduation ceremony in Perth in 1999

Until now there has been no accredited learning opportunity for those involved in the social housing field. We have therefore been viewed as people without any professional standing, and considered the poor relations by comparison with other disciplines. This course has helped establish a positive academic standing for social housing practitioners.

With its focus on the diversity of the housing industry in terms of its history, the land, construction and finance components, and the characteristics unique to social housing, the course has expanded my vision. I believe this to be of direct value to my employer, giving it a better developed employee who understands the full implications of his decisions and of the impact of those decisions, both on the agency and on the wider community and the various stakeholders.

The chance to attain knowledge of best practice throughout Australia and internationally has again been of enormous benefit. Often I have seen or discovered from others a better way of doing things –in other instances I have been pleased to learn that my agency appears to be leading the way. Exposure to other methods and practices has widened my understanding, and I have maintained my interest in seeking ideas through other agencies as a result of my studies.

Finally, I have had fun, and my understanding of learning is it becomes difficult when it is not enjoyable. I can honestly say I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience, met some wonderful people, and look forward to further study opportunities in the future.
