Student 11: Housing officer, DHS, Victoria

Why did you do the course?
After being in the sector for nearly nine years I started to realise that although I had a firm understanding of Office of Housing (OOH) policy and procedures, I did not know how this linked in with the private rental market or compared to other states in Australia or elsewhere. I also felt that there were positions that became available, where I was overlooked because of a lack of qualifications.

What were the benefits of doing the course?
As I have not yet completed the first year, benefits are at this stage limited. I have found the course to be interesting. It has made me think outside my comfort zone and look at a much bigger picture.

Did your specific housing skills and knowledge improve as a result?
Yes, I think having a better understanding of where public housing sits within the framework of our housing system helps when making decisions and talking about changes to our policies.

Where do you think your working future lies?
I would like to do some work on OOH policy and explore whether the system can be made a bit fairer, and I would also like to be able to influence people to become more vocal in asking for an expanded social housing sector.

Other comments?
I have really enjoyed my tutorials so far. Being distance education, these meetings have been great to bounce ideas around and listen to others. Have already made some great friends.
