Public Libraries and the Future of Search

What do we know about how people search for information?  Are digital technologies changing search practices? What are the new challenges and roles for public libraries in an environment of fast broadband, mobile computing, and global commercial interests in search and digitisation? This half day conference, presented by the State Library of Victoria and Swinburne University of Technology, will examine these issues in depth.

Panels comprised of leading academics and industry professionals will discuss the significant challenges facing library practitioners and policymakers with a focus on the themes of the changing nature of the digital divide, libraries and digital literacy, and the changing technological, business and regulatory environments surrounding public libraries. Participants include:

  • Craig Anderson, University Librarian RMIT University;
  • Libby Baulch, Policy Director, Policy & Government Relations, Copyright Agency Limited;
  • Dr Warwick Cathro, Assistant Director-General, Resource Sharing and Innovation  National Library of Australia;
  • Professor Brian Fitzgerald,  Professor of Intellectual Property and Innovation, Law Faculty Queensland University of Technology;
  • Ms Cathrine Harboe-Ree, University Librarian, Monash University;
  • Christine Mackenzie (CEO Yarra Plenty Regional Library);
  • Derek Whitehead (Director, Information Resources and University Copyright Officer, Swinburne University Librarian).

In addition, Dr Vivienne Waller and Dr Ian McShane, Prof Julian Thomas and Denise Meredyth (Institute for Social Research, Swinburne University of Technology) will report on the results of The Searchers project.  This three year SLV-Swinburne initiative funded by the Australian Research Council examined the strategic challenges for major public libraries presented by the development of on-line information provision.

This conference will interest policymakers, librarians, new media analysts and all those interested in new digital technologies and the role of libraries.
