Analysis of expenditure patterns and levels of household indebtedness of public and private rental households, 1975 –99

This research project looks at housing expenditure over the period 1975–99, particularly for low income households in public housing and those in the private rental sector who would be eligible for rent assistance. The data offers the opportunity for analysing the household indebtedness of low income renters in some detail, as well as broader observations on housing expenditures. The project uses secondary data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics' Household Expenditure Survey to evaluate the effects of housing assistance and public rental on household consumption decisions, and to measure the impacts of increasing private and public rental costs on household consumption decisions, indebtedness and financial stress. The project is funded by AHURI.
