The Flemington Map: an experiment in internet based hyperlocal journalism

The Flemington Map will be Australia's first sustained experiment in internet based hyperlocal journalism - a field that is burgeoning overseas. This project aims to use an internet based hyperlocal journalism site based in and serving the ethnically diverse Melbourne suburb of Flemington to explore new models for quality journalism in Australia. The suburb of Flemington is divided between residents of public housing - many of whom are recently arrived African refugees - and a largely middle class community of well established Australian born residents. The Flemington Map will explore the potential for using new media technologies to expand the historical role of the media in uniting a public under common concerns.
