Call For Papers
The Swinburne Institute for Social Research at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne invites paper and panel submissions for the 7th biennial Australian Media Traditions Conference.
For more than a decade, the Australian Media Traditions Conference has provided an interdisciplinary forum for scholars, journalists and others researching or working in the Australian media, particularly in the area of media history. Previous conferences have been held in Sydney, Yeppoon, Melbourne, Canberra and Bathurst
The 7th Australian Media Traditions Conference, Trends, Traditions and Transformations, will include a mix of keynotes, themed panels and individual academic papers that offer a depth of historical perspective about media. It seeks to cast a wide net across established and new media; informal and personal media as well as mainstream and corporate forms like telecommunications, television, radio, newspapers, magazines and books; and those like the web, mobile and social media that integrate personal and corporate elements.
Conceiving all history as embedded in media, the conference is interested in the connections between media content, practices, people and institutions and the societies in which they function. Considering Australia as part of the world, it is interested in practitioners, producers, audiences and users of media wherever they are located.
We invite academic papers and panels in all areas of historically-informed media, communications and journalism studies, including the following broad areas:
- Histories of media industries, institutions, individuals, incidents, audiences - including radio, television, newspapers, magazines, book publishing, music
- Contemporary media history, such as histories of the Internet, gaming, mobile media and user generated content
- Politics and media history
- Journalism, photo-journalism and other media professions and practices
- Media, communications and cultural policy and regulation
- Globalisation and communications networks
- Indigenous media and communications
- Media and technological change
- Personal media - photography, diaries, online profiles
- History, media representation and social memory
Please submit by 7 June 2011:
- For academic papers: an abstract of up to 300 words plus a brief biographical note
- For panels: an outline of up to 600 words including mini abstracts and bios of 3-4 proposed panellists
