Professor Julian Thomas
PhD (ANU), Grad Dip MediaCommsIT Law (Melb)
Julian Thomas is Director of the ISR, and also leads the ISR's Media
and Communications program. His research interests are in new media,
information policy and the history of communications technologies. Before
coming to the ISR in 2000, he taught new media at RMIT, worked on the
staff of the Productivity Commission's Broadcasting Inquiry, and was
a senior researcher at the former Australian Key Centre for Cultural
and Media Policy at Griffith University. His publications include studies
of intellectual property issues relating to new media, the future of
local content rules for Australian television, and computer skills in
Australian schools. He is currently writing a book about music piracy
and the internet.
Julian is an associate editor of the website Australian
Policy Online, and co-editor with Peter Browne of Briefings, a
series of books on current issues in public policy published by UNSW
Press. He is also a member of the editorial committee of the journal Southern
Review: Communication, Politics and Culture.
