Paul Reade
Paul Reade is a PhD student involved with the Institute’s project Social Memory and Historical Justice: How Democratic Societies Remember and Forget the Victimisation of Minorities in the Past. His principal focus
is the Zapatista Uprising in Mexico and the defense of memory.
Paul graduated from Monash University in 2006 with an Honours degree in
Hispanic Studies. His thesis explored the portrayal of border identities
along the Mexican–American frontier in film and the importance of
Mariachi music to social cohesion and the “buena onda”. His PhD research
will look at the rise of the Zapatista movement and its defense of
indigenous memory and culture in Chiapas, Mexico, as well as the local,
national, and global representations of the movement through film.
