David Prater
BA Hons (Syd) MA Hons (Melb)
David graduated from the University of Sydney in 1994 with an honours
degree in Australian literature. He has since worked
in a variety of social, educational and health policy settings. In 2005
he graduated from the University of Melbourne’s Department of English
with Cultural Studies with a Master of Arts (by Research Thesis).
In 1994 and 1995 David was a Graduate Administrative Assistant with
the Department of Administrative Services in Canberra
and Darwin. He has also worked as a Research Assistant at Royal North
Shore Hospital (1997) and at the University of Sydney’s Department of
Psychiatry at Nepean Hospital, Penrith (1998). Other short-term projects
include a consultancy for the NSW Health Department on its child health
policy (1997) and interviewing for Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Services
at the Springvale Community Health Centre (2000).
Between 2000 and 2002 David worked as a Research Associate with the
Centre for International Research on Communications and Information
Technology (CIRCIT) at RMIT, researching telecommunications and infrastructure
issues. During this time he produced reports for the Victorian government
(Multimedia Victoria), the Australian Communications Authority and the
Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
Between 2002 and 2004 David worked with the Asia-Pacific Centre for
Philanthropy and Social Investment, researching the need for ethical
guidelines for relationships between pharmaceutical companies and health
consumer organizations, and conducting a review of the operations and
procedures of the Rio Tinto Aboriginal Foundation.
In late 2004 David received an emerging writers grant from the Australia
Council for the Arts. In 2005 he travelled to Seoul, Korea as an Asialink
resident, with the support of the Australia Council for the Arts and
the Australia-Korea Foundation.
Since 2000, David has been the editor of Cordite
Poetry Review, an
on-line poetry journal funded by the Australia Council.
His poetry and prose have been published widely in Australia
and overseas and his debut collection of poetry, We
Will Disappear, was published by papertiger media in August 2007.
David is currently a PhD student within the ISR’s Media and Communications
program. His thesis examines the phenomena of self-publishing
and vanity publishing in the field of Australian literature.
