Student
Ron joined the ISR as a research assistant in 1999 at the completion
of his honours year in Sociology. His honours research was an evaluation
of the effectiveness of a men’s behavioural change program run
by a large counselling centre in Melbourne. Part of the evaluation looked
at the men's self identity and whether they underwent any form of identity
change during the course of the program. He now works sessionally for
that agency as a marriage educator.
As part of the ISR Ron worked primarily on statistical analysis for
the Cities and Housing program until taking up an APAi scholarship in
2002. An outline of the research project appears below. During this
time Ron has also lectured and tutored at the Lilydale campus of Swinburne
University on a sessional basis covering a range of Sociology subjects.
Prior to starting his career as a sociologist Ron was a metallurgist
and spent over 25 years working in and around the metals industry. Most
of this past life was as the technical and quality manager in a series
of iron and steel foundries both here and overseas, although he departed
from this trend for a brief period in sales and marketing.

Thesis topic
Public-private partnerships as a solution to housing affordability
problems: a case study of inner urban development
Thesis abstract
This research proposes a study into one of Australia's few public-private
partnerships (PPPs) in low-income housing provision outside of the public
housing area. The objective is to research the project from its conception,
planning and approval, to post-occupancy. The research will draw out
all the financial, political and institutional impediments to the development
of such ventures, assess how they were overcome in this particular case,
and offer policy recommendations which might see PPPs ease the shortage
of low-income housing in Australia. The case study will be the Inkerman
Oasis development constructed on the St Kilda Council Depot site in
the city of Port Phillip. The City of Port Phillip is the industry partner.
